The term comes from the Greek words gyne meaning "woman" and mastos meaning "breast." In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or, as adolescence wanes, a few years later. But the remaining 10% are burdened with a social handicap that causes a deep and complex shame, and puts one's relationship with one's body at risk.

Men and boys experience gynecomastia (breast enlargement) at various ages.   Pseudogynecomastia is breast enlargement due to fatty deposits.  True gynecomastic involves enlargement of the breast gland itself. The combination of both is the most common presentation. Unless severe, mild gynecomastia in boys will resolve with weight loss. True gynecomastia in boys and men require surgical correction. Both men and boys feel self conscious about the appearance of their  enlarged breasts. A complete examination and evaluation of medications used is necessary. Endocrine abnormalities as well as tumors can cause gynecomastic. Most gynecomastia is benign.

Before undergoing the treatment for gynecomastic, all patients will need a pre-operative consultation. At this time we review your medical history and perform an examination in an attempt to ascertain the reason for your breast enlargement. If a medical problem is suspected a referral to a medical specialist may be suggested. Once your surgeon ascertains how much fat and glandular tissue is present, he can then recommend the surgical approach that best suits your needs.
